The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has denied reports claiming that the suspected killers of Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, have been released.
Deborah, a second-year Home Economics student, was set ablaze on May 12, 2022, by Islamic extremists over allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed. She had reportedly cautioned her classmates against posting religious content on their academic WhatsApp group.
Following the arrest of some suspects by the Sokoto State Police Command, Nigerians took to social media to demand updates on the whereabouts of the suspects, one year after the incident.
Reacting to the reports, Adejobi, via his Twitter handle, clarified that the arrested suspects are currently being held in a correctional centre, awaiting prosecution by relevant authorities.
“They are in custody, Correctional Centre, under prosecution. PPRO Sokoto will address you. PRO Sokoto should come up with an update immediately. But I think some of you here should learn how to read news about incidences,” he said.
The denial from the police spokesperson brings some measure of relief to those still seeking justice for Deborah’s murder.
