Paul Pogba’s much-anticipated first start in a year was cut short on Sunday as he got injured during Juventus’ Serie A game against Cremonese in Turin. The French midfielder was substituted 23 minutes into the game and left the field in apparent agony. He was seen covering his face with his jersey as he was being subbed out.
Pogba’s injury occurred when he pulled up after putting in a routine cross before sinking to the turf, where he received on-pitch treatment on his left thigh. The 28-year-old has already missed a substantial portion of this season after suffering a serious injury to his right knee in pre-season following his return from Manchester United to Juventus last summer.
Initially, the midfielder chose to opt-out of surgery in an attempt to be fit to play in the world cup in Qatar. However, Pogba failed to recover in time to play for France, who at the time were the world champions, and were knocked out by Argentina in a dramatic final. Pogba returned to action in February, and even made a series of substitute appearances as he tried to regain his full fitness. However, a right thigh injury back in March slowed his progress.
Pogba’s previous competitive start was in Manchester United’s 4-0 defeat against Liverpool in April of 2020, wherein he suffered an early injury in the first half and did not play for the remainder of the season.
As of now, it remains unclear how long Pogba will be out of action after this latest injury. However, it is a significant setback for Juventus, who are in a four-way title race in Serie A and were counting on Pogba to make a sizable contribution to their aspirations.
