Robert Lewandowski, the Barcelona striker, made history by equaling Ronaldo Nazario’s record of scoring over 30 goals in his debut season at the club. The record has stood unbroken since the Brazilian legend’s first season at Barcelona back in 1996 to 1997.
By scoring twice in the midst of the La Liga Catalan derby, which saw Barcelona triumph 4-2 over Espanyol, Lewandowski raised his goal tally for the season to a whopping 31, which he achieved in only 42 games. Alongside this record-breaking feat, he also registered seven assists across competitions for the team.
Ronaldo Nazario, also known as “The Phenomenon,” when he was signed from PSV Eindhoven at the tender age of 20, achieved an incredible 47 goals and 12 assists in his first season with Barcelona.
It was not only Lewandowski who celebrated his achievements on the day; Barcelona clinched the title after the riveting victory in the Catalan derby against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. The victory cemented the team’s lead, with 85 points in 34 matches and 14 points ahead of their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, with just four games left in the season. The title was won once again after losing it to Real Madrid at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
