Seun Kuti Arrested for Alleged Assault: Manager Claims Police Officer Provoked Him

Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti, was arrested on Monday, May 15, 2023, by the Lagos State Police Command for questioning following allegations of assault at the Force Headquarters in Ikeja. Shedding more light on the matter, Seun’s manager, Ayo Moses, revealed that the police officer whom Seun allegedly assaulted was, in fact, the one who provoked him.

Moses explained that the incident occurred while Seun was driving with his family on the third mainland bridge when a police truck hit his car from behind. Seun’s daughter, who was in the car, became shocked and visibly shaken. Seun then pursued the truck, blocked it, and confronted the officer who came down from the truck. However, instead of apologizing, the police officer started arguing with Seun, which led to the assault. Moses emphasized that uniformed men could also provoke citizens, and immunity should not excuse impunity.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Seun’s arrest following the musician’s surrender in the early hours of May 15, 2023. Hundeyin also disclosed that the investigation process would be detailed, transparent, and professionally handled with justice manifestly served for everyone involved.

It would be recalled that Seun Kuti had earlier apologized to the assaulted policeman and given him β‚¦β€Ž12,000 to fix his damaged vehicle. Responding to a viral video of the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, ordered Seun’s arrest. Hundeyin confirmed that the officer had reported the incident at the Area F Police Command and deposited the β‚¦β€Ž12,000 with the command before the assault video went viral on social media.

In conclusion, the police authorities need to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that justice is served to all parties involved.
