The Federal Government has advised the incoming administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to strengthen anti-corruption and reform-minded institutions to effectively contribute to the economic and public finance sectors. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, gave the advice at the launch of the Gender and Environmental Reporting Frameworks for Nigeria’s oil, gas and mining sectors in Abuja. The frameworks were put together by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to help resolve the negative impacts of oil, gas, and mineral exploration in host communities nationwide. Ahmed stated that anti-corruption agencies are well positioned to guide and shape government policies, and that NEITI occupies a crucial position in Nigeria’s economic landscape, contributing to robust economic and public finance management in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of NEITI, Ogbonnaya Orji, stated that the two reports for gender and environmental issues were responses to NEITI’s readiness to move into these areas. He added that the reports were linked to the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative’s impact on the citizens of oil and gas-producing countries.
In conclusion, the Federal Government recommends to the incoming administration of President-elect, Bola Tinubu, the fortification of anti-corruption agencies and other reform-minded institutions to ensure effective contributions to Nigeria’s economic and public finance sectors. NEITI, being a unique national and international agency, is considered to be well-equipped in guiding governmental policies in the energy sector and contributing to the nation’s economic landscape.
