The United States of America (USA) has reacted to the recent attack on its convoy carrying officials in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State with a statement from the Secretary of State, Anthony J. Blinken. The attacked convoy comprised of five U.S Mission employees and four Nigeria Police Force officials. The US employees were travelling ahead as a reconnaissance team, preparing for a planned U.S-funded flood response project in Anambra.
In the statement released by Blinken, the motive behind the attack is unknown but there are no indications that it was a targeted attack against the U.S. Mission. Reports say that at least four members of the convoy were killed, while those unaccounted for have prompted a search from personnel from the U.S. Mission as well as Nigerian counterparts.
Blinken conveyed his sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families, while also promising to do all within his office to ensure the safe recovery of the missing personnel as quickly as possible.
The U.S Government has also pledged to work closely with its Nigerian law enforcement counterparts to ensure that the assailants are brought to justice, aiding in the fight against violence and insecurity across Nigeria.
The safety and security of US personnel is of utmost priority to the US Government, which holds in high esteem its relationship and partnership with Nigeria in the fight against violence and insecurity.
