The lawyer representing Afrobeat artist, Seun Kuti, Mr Olumide Adeyinka-Fusika (SAN) has stated his lack of knowledge regarding claims that the police seized his client’s gun licence. Kuti is currently in police custody for allegedly assaulting a policeman. A police search of the musician’s house in Ikeja led to the recovery of the gun licence causing speculation that the police had intended to revoke it. However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, failed to respond to inquiries regarding this allegation when contacted by journalists. Kuti’s lawyer, Olumide-Fusika, stated that he did not see any connection between his client’s case of assaulting a policeman and the police seizure of his gun licence. “A license is not a gun,” said Olumide-Fusika. “A gun license is a mere piece of paper authorising the bearer or licence to own and have possession of a specified piece of arm (gun),” he continued. Meanwhile, the police order for Kuti’s detention will expire on Thursday, but the SAN did not comment on the matter when contacted. A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba has granted the order for the musician to be detained for 48 hours to enable the police to conclude their investigation before being released on bail. In light of these events, it remains to be seen what the outcome will be for Seun Kuti and the fate of his gun licence remains unclear.
