UN Launches Record $3 Billion Appeal for 18 Million Sudanese In Need

The United Nations (UN) has launched a $3 billion appeal to deliver life-saving aid to 18 million Sudanese people impacted by a month-long heavy fighting in the country. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) would require $2.56 billion to fund its Humanitarian Response Plan, while the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) would require $472 million to support those forced to flee across Sudan’s borders. The appeal marks an almost 50% increase from three months ago. People displaced by the conflict numbered almost a million, with more than 700,000 internally displaced and 220,000 fleeing to neighbouring countries. Of the 220,000, 150,000 were Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers. The UN official says children are especially vulnerable in the unfolding chaos.
