Livy Uzoukwu, the lead counsel representing Peter Obi of the Labour Party has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of displaying bias in the 2023 presidential elections. Uzoukwu alleged that the electoral commission has failed to remain neutral and instead behaves like a candidate in its own elections.

Speaking after Thursday’s court hearing, Uzoukwu criticized INEC for its refusal to grant access to electoral materials used in the election process. Specifically, the client Peter Obi was denied access to this material. Uzoukwu stated that the amount INEC demanded for access to the materials was illegitimate.

Uzoukwu expressed hope that this conversation would prove fruitful as he was set to speak with representatives from INEC to address the matter. He questioned INEC’s lack of transparency stating how no other party complains about their inability to access electoral material except petitioners.

Uzoukwu emphasized the importance of impartiality in the electoral process and implored INEC to uphold global standards of electoral conduct. He urged Nigerian journalists to investigate INEC’s behaviour and ask questions as to why they continue to exhibit bias.
