In a recent development, the Borno State government has introduced a new dress code for Muslim students in government secondary schools across the state. According to Bukar Mustapha-Umara, the Director of Schools Management in the state’s Ministry of Education, the new dress code will take effect from the 1st Term of the 2023/2024 session.
Under the new dress code, every Muslim female student must wear a trouser, quarter blouse, a head tie, and a himar (veil) in school. Mr. Mustapha-Umara emphasized that all principals of secondary schools in the state must ensure total compliance with the new dress code.
While the new dress code is compulsory for Muslim female students, Christian female students have the option to either remain with their present dress code or switch to the trouser. This means that the new dress code applies only to Muslim female students.
The Director of Schools Management called on parents and guardians to make adequate arrangements for the new school uniform before the commencement of the 2023/2024 academic session.
The introduction of the new dress code has generated mixed reactions from stakeholders in the education sector. Some have commended the state government for taking the step to ensure discipline and modesty among students, while others have criticized the policy as discriminatory and contrary to students’ right to freedom of expression.
Regardless of the differing views, it is clear that the Borno State government’s decision to introduce a new dress code for secondary school students will significantly impact the state’s education sector. It remains to be seen how effective the policy will be in achieving its objectives and whether it will withstand the test of time.
