The Lagos State Government has unveiled a year-round drainage maintenance program aimed at effective flood control measures in the state. This announcement was made on Thursday, during a seasonal climate prediction workshop at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Olalekan Shodeinde, the provision of weather advisories to stakeholders and decision-makers in sensitive sectors such as agriculture, transportation, water resources, health, environment, and construction is essential. He also added that state flood control measures are being enhanced to withstand the expected high intensity of rainfall from May to June.
Mr. Mahmood Adegbite, the Director, Drainage Enforcement, and Compliance, who spoke at the workshop, said the ministry would upgrade its early warning system by installing automatic weather stations and river gauge stations.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, through its representative, Mr. Oyegade Adeleke, warned of a high probability of having above 50mm in one day at 80 per cent in Badagry, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Epe, Eti-Osa, Ibeju/Lekki, and Ikeja.
The Government of Lagos State aims to ensure a flood-free state by implementing these measures and ensuring proper drainage maintenance throughout the year. The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has requested that residents assist by cleaning up their immediate surroundings and not blocking drainage systems with waste.
With the implementation of these flood control measures and increased community involvement, Lagos State will maintain a safe and habitable environment for residents and visitors alike.
