Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has stressed the importance of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria, calling them the two most crucial matches in the nation’s football history. A victory in both games would secure Benin’s first ever place at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Cheetahs face Rwanda on Friday and travel to play Nigeria on Tuesday. Rohr, a Franco‑German manager who previously coached the Nigerian national team, highlighted the stakes during a press conference: “These matches against Rwanda and Nigeria are the two most important matches in the history of Benin, I think. The players are aware of that.” Recent form has been encouraging; Benin defeated Nigeria 2‑1 in June 2024, handing the Super Eagles their only loss in the qualifiers so far.
Nigeria, meanwhile, will play Lesotho in South Africa on Friday before hosting Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday. The results of these fixtures will heavily influence both sides’ chances of advancing in the qualification campaign. With so much on the line, Benin’s squad is focused on securing the wins needed to make a historic World Cup debut. The coming days will be decisive for the future of Benin’s national team in the 2026 qualifiers.
