Formerly elected councilors in Abia State have appealed to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to fulfil his obligations and pay them their severance packages, constituency allowances, and sitting allowances. In an open letter addressed to the governor, the ex-councillors demanded the approval and release of their swearing-in allowance, wardrobe allowance, car/transport allowance, and furniture allowance before his departure from office on May 29.
In their letter, the ex-councillors pleaded with the governor to authorize the payment of their entitlements, revealing that paying off their debts incurred during their swearing-in and constitutional functions would be made easier if the payments were made. The former councilors expressed their frustrations and desperation to have the matter of their allowances resolved, noting that even though it was their constitutional right, they had exhausted all democratic means to obtain payment.
The open letter was signed by Sam Charles Okeke, who relayed the councilors’ sentiments, calling on the governor to promptly address the issue of payment. The ex-councillors applauded Governor Ikpeazu for his successful governance and promised to remain loyal and supportive of his government while he remains in office.
The matter of non-payment of elected officials’ allowances has been a common occurrence in Nigeria’s politics. It is expected that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu will act swiftly on the ex-councillors’ demands and disburse their allowances before his exit from office.
