PRODA Innovates towards Producing Made-in-Nigeria Lithium-Ion Battery

The Projects Development Institute, PRODA, Enugu, a Federal Government agency, has embarked on research to produce Lithium-ion batteries made in Nigeria. This move comes as the institute aims to reduce importation of the batteries and save the nation foreign exchange.

The Director-General of PRODA, Dr. Peter Ogbobe, revealed the institute’s latest undertaking when he received members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Enugu State Correspondents’ Chapel during a courtesy visit.

Lithium-ion batteries have numerous applications, including use in inverters, phones, laptops, among others. According to Ogbobe, Nigeria has abundant granite deposits that can be utilized in the production of Lithium-ion batteries.

Ogbobe, who assumed duty last year, aims to rejuvenate PRODA through numerous projects that focus on research and development to transform the system.

During the visit, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of NUJ, Comrade Lawrence Njoku, commended Ogbobe for his remarkable leadership and the significant improvements in the institute in such a short period. Njoku stated that PRODA had witnessed substantial progress, which is attributed to the focused leadership enthroned by Ogbobe.

The quest for made-in-Nigeria products has been an agenda of the current administration, and as such, PRODA’s move to produce Lithium-ion batteries locally will contribute to achieving this objective.
