In what can only be described as yet another twist in the ongoing drama between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, the latter has alleged that the anti-graft commission’s Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, demanded a $200,000 bribe from him.
These allegations which were made during an interview with BBC Hausa, saw Governor Matawalle deny the N70 billion corruption allegation leveled against him by the EFCC. Speaking on the investigations, he urged that it be carried out holistically, and not limited to governors, reminding the EFCC Chairman of the other government officials who have access to government funds such as Ministers.
The drama didn’t end there, with Governor Matawalle calling on Mr. Bawa to subject himself to a corruption probe over “allegations” that he is yet to present evidence for.
During the said meeting, the Zamfara Governor alleged, the EFCC Boss accused him of not visiting his office often like the other governors.
After the BBC reached out to Mr. Bawa for his reaction, he threw the ball back to Governor Matawalle’s court, challenging him to release any fraud records that would justify his supposed “corruption allegations” against him.
These recent accusations have further fueled the growing tension between the Zamfara Governor and the EFCC with no end in sight. The public can only hope that the outcome of this saga brings them one step closer to a corruption-free Nigeria.
