Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, responded to threats by Abba Kabir-Yusuf, the Governor-elect, about probing the sale of government property by admitting that the sale of government property was not new. In an audio clip trending online, Ganduje said that the administration of former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso began the sale of government properties while he was deputy governor. Abdallah noted that he and Kwankwaso brought in the policy and sold several houses in the state to most politicians and workers, adding that government property is sold at all levels of government and that government does not build houses for its workers anymore.

Ganduje mentioned that some of the government houses were sold to their occupants at a later date. The governor advised the Governor-elect to ask his political godfather on how they began the policy. He further urged him to visit the radio station to retrieve the list of government houses his father and grandfather in politics sold. He threatened to reveal the names of senior government officials and politicians who bought government houses.

The sale of government property has been widely criticized and seen as a negative impact on Nigeria’s economy. However, Ganduje’s attempts to justify the sales have brought up discussions on the responsibilities of government officials and the significance of transparency in the sale of government property for public consumption.
