The governor of Zamfara state, Bello Matawalle, has accused the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, of soliciting a $2 million bribe from him.

In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Governor Matawalle claimed that Bawa requested the bribe during a meeting in a house in which he was present.

The EFCC, however, maintains that Governor Matawalle is under investigation for embezzling N70 billion meant for contracts in the state.

Responding to the allegation, Matawalle stated that he is not resisting the probe but refuted the allegations of corrupt practices. According to him, the allegations against him are lies which were constructed after he refused to give the EFCC chairman the money he requested.

He further implored the EFCC to not limit its investigation to outgoing governors alone but also extend it to the Presidency officials.

It remains to be seen how the EFCC and the governor will resolve this issue, and whether the allegations leveled against him by the anti-graft agency will eventually lead to his prosecution.
