The legal representatives of Seun Kuti, the Afrobeat singer who is in police custody, have countered reports that he was appointed as “General Overseer” by fellow inmates. According to his lawyer, Adesina Ogunlana, the singer’s real rank is “Senior Marshall”, despite rumours having circulated claiming he had been leading prayer sessions. Kuti has also been providing free performances for his fellow inmates and police officers since being remanded in custody. The singer, who is the son of late musician Fela-Anikulapo Kuti, was arrested after a video of him slapping a police officer went viral.
