Chelsea players lined up for the pre-match guard of honour for their City counterparts, who walked out onto the pitch with their children while the club anthem ‘Blue Moon’ rang around the Etihad. With City’s players and fans in a festive mood, Alvarez ensured Chelsea wouldn’t spoil the party by scoring in the 12th minute. Hundreds of supporters stormed onto the pitch as confetti and fireworks filled the blue sky.
At the other end of the table, Leeds lost to West Ham 3-1 as Rodrigo’s opener was erased by goals from Declan Rice, Jarrod Bowen, and Manuel Lanzini. Sam Allardyce’s team is in danger of relegation as they sit two points adrift of fourth-bottom Everton with just one game remaining. Leeds is set to play against Tottenham on the final day of the season. If they win, and Everton loses, they could stay in the Premier League. Brighton secured European football for the first time in their history with a 3-1 win against Southampton. Finally, Roberto De Zerbi’s sixth-placed side can ensure they play in the Europa League by taking one point from their last two games.
