Yobe State and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) Collaborate to Mitigate Flooding

As part of efforts to mitigate and respond to possible flooding in the state, the Yobe Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) partnered with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) to conduct a four-day field visit to flood-prone communities in four local government areas of the state. These local government areas include Jakusko, Bade, Nguru and Karasuwa.

Speaking on Sunday, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mohammed Goje, explained that the purpose of the visit was to conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in order to consult and engage with members of the communities and gather information on the level of vulnerability, coping strategies, impact, strengths, gaps and community preparations for possible flooding in 2023. The consultation included discussions with local government staff, religious leaders, women and youth groups.

The focus group’s findings will be shared with relevant authorities for action and mitigation planning. The next phase of the visit will be extended to other local government areas in the state.
