Family expresses gratitude to FG and Saudi monarch over successful separation of conjoined twins

The family of conjoined twins, Hassana and Hasina, has expressed appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Saudi Monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, for their immense support towards the successful separation of the twins. The highly complex operation was carried out by 35 consultants, specialists, and other technical personnel at King Abdullah Specialist Hospital.

In a 14-hour long procedure that took place on May 18, the twins were successfully separated and are currently in good health. The humanitarian auspices for Children of the Saudi Monarch at King Abdulaziz Medical City of the National Guard in Riyadh facilitated the surgery.

The twins were born in Kaduna, Nigeria on January 12, 2022, and shared the abdomen, pelvis, liver, intestines, urinary and reproductive system, and pelvic bones. Speaking on behalf of the family members, Mr. Aliyu Abdulmalik expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian Government for the technical support received and the Saudi Monarch for the financial support.

“We thank King Salman and the Prince for their support from the day we arrived in Saudi Arabia. We were given first-class treatment from December 8 when we arrived till the day of the operation. This operation is supposed to cost N36 million but it was done free,” Abdulmalik stated while commending the Saudi programme for the separation of Siamese twins for their expertise in the surgery.

Abdulmalik disclosed that the Saudi programme had supervised 130 cases from 23 countries over 33 years and separated 55 cases. Hassana and Hasina were the 56th case. The family member attributed the success of the surgery to God’s intervention, saying that it was indeed an excellent example of service to humanity.

In conclusion, it is noteworthy to mention that this remarkable achievement highlights the potential of the Nigerian healthcare system when it comes to delivering high-quality and life-changing medical procedures.
