Tony Blair meets with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu before his May 29th Swearing-In

Former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, met with Nigerian President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Defence House on Tuesday. The meeting comes just one week before Tinubu’s swearing-in ceremony as President.

Blair was said to be in the country to have a “crucial diplomatic meeting” with Tinubu to foster a bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The meeting was also attended by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima.

Last week, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had a call with Tinubu to emphasise his continued commitment to strengthening the US-Nigeria relationship with the incoming administration.

During his conversation with Blinken, Tinubu pledged to unify the country and ensure positive relations with the United States. Among his immediate priorities upon taking office would be to deliver institutional reforms and development programmes to help impoverished and vulnerable Nigerians.

During the 20-minute meeting with Blair, Tinubu spoke about his eventful sojourn in the United States in the 1970s, where he earned his honours degree in accountancy in 1979.

Despite the meeting and communications with international officials, Tinubu’s media team has yet to release an official statement regarding the agenda of the meeting.
