Supreme Court Declines to Grant Writ Prayed for by Liberian Government in U.S.$100m Cocaine Case

In a fresh blow to the Liberian Government, Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay declined to grant the peremptory writ prayed for by the Government in relation to the US$100m Cocaine Casa case which had seen accused individuals acquitted on all charges. Justice Gbeisay’s decision comes just days after the accused were acquitted of all charges and it had been ordered by Blamo Dixon, the trial judge, that the defendants’ money should be returned. The government subsequently filed a peremptory writ seeking to overturn the judge’s decision. However, during the subsequent conference with both parties in chamber, the Supreme Court Justice found that there were no merits in the case. The court’s verdict has prompted prosecution to announce an appeal to the full Supreme Court.
