Leah Sharibu: Buhari’s Unfulfilled Promise and Nigeria’s State of Insecurity

Despite years of promises to secure the freedom of Leah Sharibu and other students held captive by Boko Haram terrorists and bandits, President Muhammadu Buhari is leaving office without fulfilling his pledge, much to the disappointment of parents and other Nigerians. The President, who is about to exit office, is known for his unfulfilled promises, particularly in the security sector. Nigeria has experienced insecurity, such as ethnic clashes, kidnapping, killings, and rapes, leaving citizens at the mercy of insurgents and criminals.

Leah Sharibu, who has spent over three years in captivity, is one of the many innocent girls held captive by insurgents. Sharibu, a Christian, was kidnapped alongside 109 other female students of the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, by Boko Haram terrorists. Leah is still in captivity because she refused to denounce her faith, while others were freed following negotiations. Buhari’s government has made empty promises to the parents of the abducted girls, including Leah Sharibu, leaving them brokenhearted, traumatised, and without any hope.

Nigeria’s security situation continues to deteriorate, with an increasing rate of abductions, human rights violations and loss of life across the country’s regions. According to UNICEF, Nigeria ranks among the nations with the highest verified cases of abductions in 2021, with thousands of children held captive by insurgents. The Buhari government has failed to unite the country or fulfil its campaign promises of making Nigeria a safer place.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) — North-West Zone has accused Buhari’s government of being a total failure, causing untold hardship to ordinary Nigerians. The Secretary of CAN and its former Director of National Issues, Sunday Oibe, said the Buhari administration had witnessed high levels of insecurity and an economy that was in shambles. Oibe lamented that Nigerians had never been more divided than under the present government, with the worst yet to be seen.

As President Buhari leaves, Nigerians are left questioning his legacy, what will remain of his administration’s promises of change, and the future of Leah Sharibu and other innocent girls held captive by terrorists and bandits.
