Members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have commended the Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, for elevating Nigeria to the top in the multilateral scene. At a farewell reception organised in honour of the Minister and the Minister of State, Zubairu Dada in Abuja, several staff members attested to the positive impact the Minister had made during his eight years in office. Director, Economic Trade and Investment Division in the Ministry, Amb. Bola Akinremi, said Onyeama’s expertise, garnered from his over 30 years of international organisation experience, enabled Nigeria to achieve critical positions in world bodies such as the African Development Bank, AfDB.
Akinremi described Onyeama’s success and impact as evident in Nigeria’s robust relationships with several countries and the diplomatic community. He noted that the Minister’s tenure aided the boost of international organizations where several Nigerians currently serve, including the President of the ADB. Speaking on Mr Onyeama’s professionalism, Akinremi highlighted his ability to adapt to the Nigerian diplomatic landscape despite not being a career diplomat; this made him “a rare gem”, according to the Director.
The Ministry’s Spokesperson, Amb. Francisca Omayuli, also praised the Ministers, describing them as mentors who led by example. Expressing gratitude, Onyeama commended the staff and Foreign Service Officers for their cooperation, dedication, which contributed to his success. He also thanked President Buhari for prioritizing Nigeria’s interest and foreign relations, allowing the country’s leaders to occupy top positions in multilateral institutions. However, he urged the government to increase funding to the Foreign Service, stating that a paucity of funds had limited its operation.
In summary, Mr Onyeama’s diplomatic experience has positively impacted Nigeria’s representation and capacity to compete in multilateral fora. He has also been praised for prioritizing and elevating the country’s interests in foreign relations.
