Abeokuta, Ogun State – A Hausa trader based in Abeokuta was robbed of $11 million by a four-man robbery gang on Friday. The incident, which took place in the Oke-Sokori area of Abeokuta, lasted for about three minutes.
The victim, who remains unnamed, had attempted to deposit the foreign currency in a new generation bank at Oke-Ilewo earlier, but was turned back for arriving after banking hours. While en route his base, the robbers struck, halted him and dispossessed him of the money. They were masked and dressed in black.
An eyewitness informed that the robbery suspects acted in a vehicle that had tinted windows, Toyota Camry ‘Muscle’ model. This act was committed in broad daylight at about 4:35pm on Friday, directly in front of the FATGBEMS Petroleum Filling Station located in Oke-Sokori. The robbers forcefully stopped the trader’s Toyota Venza car and took his money in two ‘Ghana-Must-Go’ bags from the car booth before absconding with the car key.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated that the Command’s investigative team is on the trail of the suspects.
Instances of roadside robberies seem to be on the rise in Nigeria despite the efforts of the police to checkmate it. This case leaves many Nigerians pondering about the level of security in the country, especially for businesses who are prone to lose their assets and lives at the mercy of robbers.
