Oyo Police Issue Warning Against Possession of Illegal Firearms During Inauguration

Ahead of the second term inauguration of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and his deputy, Bayo Lawal on May 29, the Oyo State Police Command has issued a stern warning against the possession of unauthorised firearms and other weapons. The Command stated that only accredited security agents would be allowed to carry weapons at the Liberty Stadium where the inauguration will take place and its environs.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the Command disclosed that stern sanctions and prosecution will be the lot of any offender, regardless of their standing in society. He also reiterated that the Police would deploy adequate personnel to protect the length and breadth of the state, including major roads, highways, airports, critical infrastructure, and boundaries in and out of the state.

Osifeso further stated that the Command would also embark on high-octane joint patrol operations with other sister security agencies, intensive stop-and-search exercises at designated checkpoints across the state, intelligence-led surveillance activities, and visibility policing in strict adherence to the standard operating procedure.

He also called on residents to stay clear of the inauguration venue if they do not have any business there. Osifeso warned that anyone caught with the intent to cause trouble or disrupt the proceedings would face the consequences of their actions.

In an effort to ease traffic, the Police disclosed that there would be road diversions in different areas of the state. The affected area include the Bola Ige/Christ High School junction where an alternative route is Imalefalafia to Ring Road; Jogor Center/Liberty road junction where an alternative route is Iyana-Adeoyo through Ososami to Ibadan Central Mosque to Molete/Oke-Ado road and Ansarudeen/Liberty road where an alternative route is Bola Ige junction through Ososami to Iyana-Adeoyo. There will also be a road diversion to one-way from Ajibode Junction to Bodija/UI Junction.

In conclusion, the Oyo State Police Command assures all residents of adequate security personnel deployment and high-level security protocols to ensure a successful inauguration day. The Police urges the public to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
