The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has ordered the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to disconnect all uncertified 33 Kilovolt and 11kV transformers under its franchise. The directive was issued in an enforcement notice on Friday by NERC, in compliance with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) Act of 2015 and the Nigerian Electricity Supply and Installation Standards Regulation of 2015.

NERC expressed displeasure with the nonchalant attitude of some Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) towards their operations and their disregard for stipulated laws. The notice from NERC reads: “Directed Enugu DisCo to immediately disconnect the following 33kV and 11kV transformer installations connected without statutory Inspection, testing, and certification by NEMSA”.

13 installations, including a substation at Immigration Services Office Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, Emene, Enugu; Built Mart Plaza, Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, Independence Layout Phase 2, Enugu; and a palm kernel factory at Centenary City Junction, Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu, were all listed to be disconnected instantly by the power firm.

The other disconnected installations include a pole mounted substation connected to a residential/hotel building and a substation opposite the Centenary Street Junction. Meanwhile, EEDC has assured its customers that it remains committed to providing top-notch power supply to its franchise areas.
