A prominent policy advocacy group, the Think Tank on Nigeria (TToN), has recently proposed measures to fight corruption in the country. The group, which boasts a membership of over 250 professionals from various geopolitical zones of Nigeria, believes that political positions should be made less attractive to curb corruption in the country. They also emphasized the need to strengthen Nigeria’s legal and institutional frameworks.

During their recent meeting, attended by 84 members, TToN stated that Nigeria should pass and enforce more robust anti-corruption laws and regulations. They also stressed the need to establish independent institutions to investigate and prosecute corruption cases. TToN urged the government to be transparent in its decision-making processes, with timely disclosure of all activities to the public.

To create an enabling environment where ordinary citizens can speak out against corruption, TToN suggested raising awareness of government processes and bureaucracy at all levels. Additionally, the tax percentages for wealthy individuals should be higher to deter wealth inequality, and their tax status ought to undergo due checks. In addition to this, those involved in oversight functions must avoid all forms of corruption, and meritocracy should be encouraged in all areas.

In the supply chain of corrupt activities, TToN advised that all those involved be drastically reduced to reduce the overall demand for corrupt practices. Strong laws should be put in place and enforced, with an uncompromising stance from leaders in positions of power. The group was also of the opinion that Nigeria should have fair laws, with checks and balances in place for all citizens. Best practices from other countries could be implemented, with the possible help of psychologists to drive home the message that corruption is detrimental to national growth.

TToN’s recommendations are indeed significant, as corruption has been an ongoing issue in Nigeria. Implementing these proposals would require significant effort and political will, but they could be the key to reducing corruption in the country.
