Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), have pledged their support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2023 presidential elections.
During a courtesy visit by APGA’s National Working Committee to Soludo at his residence in Awka, Anambra State, the party’s Chairman, Ozonkpu Victor Oye, called for the restructuring of Nigeria to address the various challenges facing the country.
Soludo expressed his admiration for Tinubu, stating that “he is one of the politicians in Nigeria I respect a lot…If Tinubu is interested, I will support him. Without Tinubu, there wouldn’t have been APC, and the country will be worse for it.”
The former CBN Governor also spoke on the need for strong political leadership to tackle Nigeria’s numerous problems, stating, “We have a leadership crisis. The crisis of leadership is not just a political one, but also a crisis of institutional leadership.”
In response, APGA Chairman Oye stated that the present system is not working and called for a new system of government that would be people-oriented.
“We have to restructure the country, decentralize the institutions, and make the people the focus of government. It is time for a new system,” Oye said.
The visit is seen as a move by APGA to strengthen its ties with influential politicians ahead of the 2023 general elections. With Soludo’s endorsement of Tinubu and APGA’s call for restructuring, it remains to be seen what impact this will have on the political landscape in the coming months and years.
