Sudan army suspends truce talks with paramilitary groups

The Sudanese army has suspended truce talks with paramilitary groups, triggering concerns of renewed violence in the already volatile region. The suspension of talks comes after deadly clashes between government forces and a faction of the Sudan Liberation Army.

The talks, which were mediated by the United Nations and African Union, aimed to end years of conflict between the government and various rebel groups. The suspension is a significant blow to the peace process and has raised fears of a return to full-scale warfare.

The disagreement revolves around the role of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the negotiations. The RSF, headed by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti, were accused of committing war crimes during the conflict in Darfur.

The SRF is strongly opposed to the RSF’s involvement in the peace talks, arguing that they are not a legitimate political entity. The army, however, has insisted on the inclusion of the RSF in the negotiations.

The suspension of talks has been met with disappointment from both the United Nations and the African Union, who have been working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The African Union has urged both sides to return to the negotiating table and reach a compromise.

The conflict in Sudan has been ongoing for decades, with various rebel groups fighting against the government for greater autonomy and resources. The conflict has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.

The suspension of the talks comes at a time of heightened tensions in the country, following the overthrow of long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. The transition to a civilian government has been fraught with challenges, including economic instability and ongoing violence.

It remains to be seen how the suspension of talks will impact the already fragile situation in Sudan. With the continued support of the international community, there is hope that a peaceful resolution to the conflict can still be achieved.
