The World Bank has provided a loan of $255 million to China for a project aimed at reducing methane emissions and enhancing irrigation in rice production in central China.
World Bank Country Director for China, Mongolia, and Korea, Mara Warwick stated that the funds would be utilized to transform drainage services in rice production.
The funding will contribute to improving climate change resilience in rural areas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in grain production.
Over the next five years, the project with a total budget of $1.24 billion through Chinese government funds and World Bank loans will help develop a model for sustainable rice production.
This initiative aims to provide innovative solutions for climate mitigation in China’s agricultural sector and create knowledge and experience for other rice-growing countries around the world that can be easily replicated and scaled-up.
The project hopes to significantly reduce the environmental impact of rice production in China.
The World Bank remains committed to promoting innovative and environmentally sustainable projects in developing countries worldwide.
