House of Representatives Requests Palliatives in Response to Subsidy Removal

The House of Representatives has called on the new administration to provide palliatives to help Nigerians cope with the effects of the recent petroleum subsidy removal. This recommendation was adopted on Thursday as part of a report submitted by a committee set up last year to investigate subsidy.

The resolution also included the procurement of CNG buses as an alternative means of transport for Nigerians, which is cheaper to run than petroleum-based vehicles. According to the report, “The Federal Government should immediately design measures and palliatives to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal for Nigerians effective from this year 2023 through the provision and procurement of CNG buses as an alternative transport system with cheaper fuel consumption. The government should also introduce an intermodal, regional and national transport system to ease the mass movement of people across the country.”

It should be recalled that the recent declaration of the end of subsidies by President Bola Tinubu has led to an increase in the price of PMS (petrol) across the country. However, it is important to note that Facebook prohibits the promotion of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Therefore, we do not support any news that may suggest or trigger suicidal behavior.

Many transportation operators have also increased their fares due to this latest development, prompting lawmakers to request that measures be put in place to alleviate the burden on Nigerians. With the adoption of the report, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these recommendations while prioritizing the welfare of the citizens.
