The Job Creation and Empowerment Initiative of the Federal Government, known as JOOPSA, is currently providing training to 2,500 workers in Edo State. The initiative was launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to provide job opportunities and skill acquisition for unemployed and underemployed youths across Nigeria.

The training which commenced on Monday, 1st March 2021, is taking place at the Edo Production Center, located at Sapele Road, Benin City. It is aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of participants in different areas such as computer and ICT, agriculture, catering, and fashion design.

The Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry, Charles Akpan, said the initiative is in line with the federal government’s agenda of promoting skills acquisition among Nigerians and reducing unemployment.

Akpan stated that the training program has been designed to address the shortage of skilled manpower in various sectors of the economy. He highlighted the importance of providing adequate training and support to individuals who may not have the means to pursue advanced education but have the talent and potential to contribute significantly to society.

According to Akpan, the initiative has recorded significant success since its launch, with over 30,000 individuals already trained across Nigeria, and many of them have gone on to establish successful businesses in their respective fields.

The training program in Edo State is expected to run for a period of six months, during which participants will be provided with necessary materials and tools to aid in their training.

It is hoped that with the provision of these essential skills and knowledge, the participants will be better equipped to take advantage of opportunities within their respective sectors, thereby reducing unemployment and alleviating poverty in Nigeria.
