Protecting Vulnerable Children: South Africa Commemorates International Children’s Day by Eliminating Harmful Practices

In line with the International Children’s Day commemoration, the South African Department of Social Development has called on all social partners to safeguard children against harmful practices. The theme of the 2021 commemoration is “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children.” The Minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, has emphasized the negative impact of female genital mutilation, hate crimes, and other damaging practices on a child’s well-being and future prospects. During Child Protection Week, the commemoration addresses the many harmful practices that are perpetuated through societal discrimination and violence.

The Child Protection Week campaign also involves expanding the legal protection available for children. The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 states that no child should be subjected to social, cultural, or religious practices that would negatively affect their well-being. The minimum age for marriage and the prohibition of female circumcision and virginity testing of children under 18 are also specified in the Act.

In marking the International Day of Children on 3 June 2023, the Department of Social Development will join its partners and stakeholders in De Aar, Northern Cape, to promote the prevention of harmful practices and safeguarding of children. Protecting children against harmful practices is critical because it mitigates the negative impact that these acts have on their well-being and futures, ultimately improving the prospects for society as a whole.
