The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recently detained a former Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan, popularly known as Mama Taraba, over alleged involvement in a N2 billion scam during her tenure in office. The EFCC had received a petition from a concerned individual, prompting the detention of Al-Hassan and her associates.

Al-Hassan served as Minister of Women Affairs under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2018. However, the allegations against her date back to her tenure as a Governorship candidate in Taraba State, where it was claimed that she illegally withdrew N450 million from the state funds and disbursed it to Taraba APC stakeholders for the 2015 general elections.

An EFCC source, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, revealed that the former Minister had been “in and out” of the EFCC’s custody before being detained. The anti-graft agency has been conducting investigations into the fraud allegations against Al-Hassan and some of her associates for some time now.

The EFCC had also reportedly questioned some of her loyalists in Taraba State, including commissioners and aides, over the alleged embezzlement of government funds. The source stated that the investigation was still ongoing and that the commission would ensure that justice was served.

In line with Facebook policy on suicide and self-harm, it is important to note that while corruption remains a major issue in Nigeria, detentions such as this serve as a reminder that the fight against corruption is ongoing. As such, the EFCC will continue to investigate and prosecute those involved in corrupt practices regardless of their status or position in society.

In conclusion, Al-Hassan’s recent detention by the EFCC is a reminder that the law will catch up with anyone involved in illegal activities, no matter how long it takes. It also sends a strong message that Nigeria is committed to fighting corruption and bringing those responsible to justice.
