The government of Edo State has announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in the state from N30,000 to N40,000. The announcement was made by Governor Godwin Obaseki in a statement released on Tuesday.
The statement also revealed that civil and public servants would now be working three days a week instead of the regular five days due to the lingering effects of the petrol subsidy removal. This policy is aimed at reducing the hardship faced by workers in the state.
Governor Obaseki expressed the government’s commitment to stand with workers during the difficult times brought about by the current economic situation. He assured the residents of the state that the government would do everything in its power to alleviate their sufferings.
The statement further disclosed that the action was taken in an effort to ensure that the workers in the state were adequately compensated. Edo state now has the highest minimum wage in the country.
This announcement has been met with widespread approval from the labour unions in the state. The chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, Emmanuel Ademokun, applauded the government’s decision and commended the governor for his unwavering commitment towards workers’ welfare.
Overall, the government’s decision to increase the minimum wage and reduce the number of workdays is a step in the right direction as it would ease the burden on workers and somewhat cushion the effects of the current economic situation.
