The Sudanese Army Chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has declined to meet with his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who is now an opposing general. This decision comes as the war, which began on April 15, 2023, continues to escalate. A government official shared this information after a recent summit held in Djibouti by East Africa’s Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), where a meeting between the two was proposed.
During the 14th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly of Heads of State and Government, a four-point action plan was adopted to address the ongoing crisis in Sudan. This plan included the arrangement of a face-to-face meeting between General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairperson of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, and General Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo in one of the regional capitals.
IGAD is comprised of nine member states, namely Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, and Eritrea, who recently rejoined the regional bloc. The organization aims to promote peace, stability, and economic integration in the East African region.
Since the conflict began, over 1800 people have lost their lives, and nearly 2 million have been internally and externally displaced. The refusal of Sudan’s Army Chief to engage in dialogue with his former deputy raises concerns about the potential for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
