In a bid to combat oil theft and revive the nation’s economy, President Bola Tinubu has garnered support from the Niger Delta region, with prominent activist Asari Dokubo pledging his commitment to the cause during a visit to the president in Abuja.
Mr. Dokubo expressed concern that the region’s resources were being hijacked by a few individuals and their collaborators, highlighting the detrimental impact on the citizenry. He assured the president that Niger Delta activists would work tirelessly to ensure that the wealth of the people is utilized judiciously for the common good of the region and its inhabitants.
Regarding the issue of oil theft, Mr. Dokubo shed light on the organized nature of the crime, implicating powerful individuals, including military personnel based in Abuja who give directives. Despite the crimes occurring in close proximity to security posts guarding the oil installations, these security agents have allegedly intimidated other authorized agencies mandated to protect such facilities.
Expressing his resolve to tackle these challenges head-on, Mr. Dokubo emphasized the need to expose and confront these elements in order to safeguard the economy from further damage.
The activist disclosed that he had engaged in extensive discussions with the president, expressing optimism that the corruption within the system would be eradicated, fostering an environment of progress and development in the Niger Delta region.
He further stressed that the nation should not be held captive by a select few who have little interest in the advancement of the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. Mr. Dokubo affirmed his commitment to collaborate with all stakeholders in the fight against oil theft and various other crimes that undermine the nation’s economic well-being.
It is my hope that, together, we will achieve a zero level of oil theft and effectively combat other challenges that threaten the nation’s prosperity,” vowed Mr. Dokubo.
