In a recent development, Chief Philip Agbese, the lawmaker representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, has called on former Niger Delta militant and leader, Asari Dokubo, to cease undermining the efforts of the Nigerian military. This clarion call comes after Dokubo alleged that a significant portion of oil theft cases in the oil-rich Niger Delta region can be traced back to the involvement of troops.
During a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House on Friday, Dokubo expressed his viewpoint on the matter. However, Agbese, while acknowledging his alignment with Dokubo on several issues, dismisses his latest statements.
Agbese’s statement reads, “I appreciate Dokubo, who is my good friend, for his unequivocal stand on a lot of issues, but I think he missed the point on this particular subject. Our officers are not in any way complicit, even though much can still be achieved in the area of protecting our national assets in the Niger Delta.”
Agbese continues, “Dokubo simply wants to be involved, which is within his right. However, we must not tarnish the reputation of others to achieve our goals. The sacrifices made by our military officers and men, who give everything to keep the country together, should not be taken for granted. If there are lapses, we expect Dokubo, as an elder statesman, to provide relevant information and support to the troops.”
Undoubtedly, it is imperative to acknowledge the valiant efforts and commitment of the Nigerian military towards preserving the nation’s security. The lawmaker emphasizes that while there may be areas that require improvement in safeguarding national assets in the Niger Delta region, it is unjust to implicate the military as accessories to oil bunkering activities.
Furthermore, Agbese asserts, “We have transcended the era of militancy. If that is what Dokubo is advocating for, I am sorry to say it is not a viable option. Our military has consistently demonstrated its capability to tackle any challenges it faces.”
As debates continue to surround the issue of oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, it is crucial for stakeholders to engage in productive conversations that contribute to finding viable solutions. The exchange between Agbese and Dokubo serves as a reminder of the need to support the military in their tireless efforts to maintain national security and protect vital resources such as oil in the Niger Delta.
