The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has taken a proactive step by inaugurating an ad-hoc committee to review the laws passed by the 7th Assembly between July and November 2022. This move showcases the commitment of the Speaker and the Assembly to ensure effective governance and accountability in the state.
It is noteworthy that the Speaker had, on June 6, 2023, pledged to revisit the laws passed by the 7th Assembly after the 2022 gubernatorial election. True to his word, Speaker Egbedun has now taken the necessary action to fulfill this promise.
The ad-hoc committee, whose responsibility is to critically examine the content of the laws, including the titles, sessions, and schedules, will also assess the policy thrust of the bills. The committee will then make appropriate recommendations to the House for consideration. This rigorous evaluation will help identify any gaps, inconsistencies, or areas needing improvement in the legislative framework of Osun State.
The announcement of the committee’s formation was made by Speaker Egbedun during the house’s plenary session held on Monday in Osogbo, the state capital. The Speaker’s swift action in constituting the committee demonstrates his commitment to fulfilling his leadership duties diligently.
The committee, which will be led by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Akinyode Oyewusi, as Chairman, and Rachael Ojimi, Director of Legal, as Secretary, comprises well-informed individuals who bring valuable expertise and perspectives to the review process.
The laws that will undergo review include the University of Ilesa Establishment Law, 2022; Environmental Protection Establishment Law, 2022; Osun State University Teaching Hospital Establishment Law, 2022; Osun Examination Board Establishment Law, 2022; and Osun New Town and Development Establishment Law, 2022. It is crucial for the committee to meticulously analyze these laws to ensure they align with the current needs and aspirations of the people of Osun State.
This initiative by the Speaker and the Osun State House of Assembly deserves commendation as it demonstrates a commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability. Through this meticulous review process, the legislature will promote the development of robust laws that address the challenges faced by the people, stimulate socioeconomic growth, and enhance the overall well-being of the state.
Indeed, the inauguration of this ad-hoc committee marks a significant step in the direction of effective legislation and governance in Osun State. It is expected that the committee will demonstrate diligence, thoroughness, and objectivity in their review process, thereby enabling the House to make informed decisions on necessary amendments or reforms to existing laws. Ultimately, the desired outcome should be a legislative framework that empowers the leadership and residents of Osun State to build a prosperous and inclusive society.
