The Kano State Government has taken the decision to suspend the salaries of 10,000 workers who were hastily employed during the twilight of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. This move comes as part of ongoing investigations into their employment status.
Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, the Accountant General of the state, revealed this information during a press briefing in Kano on Monday. Mr Abdulsalam disclosed that the said workers were employed towards the end of the previous administration, and their employment will now be thoroughly probed by a committee tasked with the responsibility.
The Accountant General further emphasized that the findings of the investigation will greatly influence the fate of these workers. This indicates that the government is determined to ensure transparency and accountability in public service employment.
In addition to the suspension of salaries, Mr Abdulsalam also announced the halt of transfers made by the previous government within the civil service. These transfers were reportedly in violation of existing rules and regulations. The affected government officials have been instructed to maintain the status quo ante until further notice.
Highlighting the new administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers, Mr Abdulsalam assured that salaries will be paid promptly by the 25th of each month. He also stated that pension and gratuity payments for retired workers will be made promptly and on time.
Furthermore, the Accountant General disclosed that the new administration will operate a single account as a part of their strategy to ensure financial discipline. This move aligns with efforts to streamline government spending and improve accountability in the management of public funds.
The suspension of salaries and the investigation into employment practices send a clear message that the Kano State Government is committed to upholding integrity and accountability in its administration. The actions taken are in line with efforts to promote good governance and ensure that public resources are utilized effectively for the benefit of the people.
