It’s crucial we keep engaging Niger coup leaders – President Tinubu

Nigerian President and Chairman of the Economic Community Of West African State, ECOWAS has disclosed the body will continue to engage the Niger coup leaders who recently took over power from the constitutional government.

Tinubu made this known on Thursday in Abuja while declaring the ECOWAS’ 2nd Extraordinary Summit on the socio-political situation in the Republic of Niger open.

According to the president, the West African regional bloc will continue to champion diplomacy and dialogue with stakeholders in Niger, with the aim of restoring the ousted constitutional government.

He stressed the need to engage in earnest discussions with all parties involved, to restore normalcy in the Republic of Niger.

“In reaffirming our relentless commitment to democracy, human rights, and the well-being of the people of Niger, it is crucial that we prioritize diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as the bedrock of our approach.

“We must engage all parties involved, including the coup leaders, in earnest discussions to convince them to relinquish power and reinstate President Bazoum”, he said.
