The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), representing aviation workers, has decided to suspend their planned strike scheduled for August 16, following intervention from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Mr Ocheme Oba, General Secretary of NUATE, confirmed this development in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.
In a circular released on August 15, NUATE had announced that aviation security workers would engage in an indefinite nationwide strike due to dismal wages.
The circular highlighted that these workers are currently earning a paltry sum of N30,000 per month, which is grossly inadequate and has resulted in considerable hardship for them.
Oba disclosed that the union had formally notified the NCAA of their decision to proceed with the industrial action.
He further explained that following receipt of the letter, the NCAA promptly intervened in the matter and requested a one-week period to deliberate on the workers’ demands.
The General Secretary stated that the NCAA has assured the union of organizing a meeting involving the union, private security firms, and airlines to discuss and address the workers’ grievances.
