At least 17 soldiers from Niger were tragically killed and 20 others sustained injuries in a brutal attack believed to be carried out by terrorists near the border of Niger and Mali. According to the defense ministry in Niamey, the ambush occurred in the town of Koutougou, as a detachment of the Niger Armed Forces (FAN) was moving between Boni and Torodi.
The ministry released a statement late Tuesday evening, revealing the distressing news and providing some details about the incident. It confirmed that 17 soldiers had lost their lives, with 20 others wounded, six of whom are in critical condition. All the injured soldiers were immediately evacuated to Niamey, the capital of Niger. The defense ministry also mentioned that a mopping-up operation is currently underway to ensure the area is secure.
The Nigerien army further disclosed that during the attack, they managed to neutralize more than a hundred terrorists as they were retreating. Two columns, each consisting of over fifty motorcycles, were destroyed by the armed forces. This retaliation showcases the military’s commitment to combating the menace of terrorism in the region.
Koutougou, the site of the ambush, is in the Tillabéri region near the border with Mali. The area has long been a target for militants and is part of the “three borders” region, which includes Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, and is known for its volatile security situation.
The assault near the Mali border stands as the deadliest attack since the coup on July 27th in Niger, which saw the removal of the elected President Mohamed Bazoum. The military regime led by General Abdourahamane Tiani cited the deteriorating security situation as the primary reason behind the coup.
Despite ongoing efforts by anti-terrorist forces, militants continue to launch attacks against Niger. This difficult security situation has persisted over the years, with the Tillabéri region being a frequent target for armed groups. Prior to the coup, France had been collaborating closely with the Nigerien army, dedicating 1,500 soldiers to assist in the fight against these terrorist groups. However, the new military administration in Niamey has directed their attention towards France, accusing the former colonial power of attempting to militarily intervene to reinstate President Bazoum.
The attack near the Mali border serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region and the immense challenges faced by the Nigerien armed forces. With their sacrifices and the continued support from international partners, Niger is determined to restore peace and security to its territories, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
