The Kano State Government has expressed deep concern over an alert raised by Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge, the Chairperson of the Kano State National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, regarding an alleged attempt to bribe a tribunal member.
Mrs. Azinge vocalized her distress in open court on Tuesday in Kano, lamenting the unethical practices of senior lawyers who were allegedly involved in attempting to manipulate justice by bribing a member of the tribunal.
In response to these alarming allegations, the State Commissioner of Information, Baba Halilu-Dantiye, released a statement on Thursday, expressing the government’s utmost concern and highlighting the possibility that “strong forces known for their corrupt attitude are working tirelessly to scuttle the hard-earned mandate of the people of Kano State.”
The statement further emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the matter, stating that it serves as a litmus test for the present administration’s commitment to combating corruption and upholding democratic principles. The government called for the prosecution of those found guilty.
“The anti-corruption agencies must swing into action, particularly when such an allegation was made in open court by a respected judge,” Mr. Dantiye stated.
However, amidst the concern, the government expressed gratitude towards Justice Azinge for her actions, indicating that her refusal to succumb to bribery is a testament to the integrity present within the Nigerian judiciary.
The statement also acknowledged the support of the people of Kano, who voted the NNPP into power with over one million votes, despite their limited financial resources.
The government concluded by affirming its commitment to protect the people’s mandate through any means necessary.
