Niger Residents in Kano Stage Protest, Urging ECOWAS for Peaceful Resolution

Residents of Niger who reside in Kano State took to the streets in a peaceful protest against the recent coup in their home country.

They expressed their support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sanctions imposed on Niger following the military coup.

While condemning the coup that removed President Mohamed Bazoum’s democratically elected government, the residents cautioned against military intervention in their nation’s affairs.

Leading the demonstration on Saturday in Kano, Chairman of the group, Lawalli Mamman Barma, passionately appealed to the coup leaders, urging them to release President Mohamed Bazoum, his family, and all other individuals allegedly abducted during the military intervention on July 16, 2023, unconditionally.

He emphasized, “We demand the immediate release of the President of Niger Republic, along with his family and all other abducted persons, without any prerequisites.”

Additionally, the chairman called for the restoration of democratic leadership in Niger Republic, imploring ECOWAS to reconsider its decision to deploy military forces in the country. He emphasized the importance of dialogue as the optimal approach to conflict resolution, emphasizing that military confrontation should be avoided.
