Abia Warriors, a prominent club in the Nigeria Professional Football League, has made a significant addition to their coaching staff with the appointment of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, as their new goalkeeper trainer.
The Umuahia-based team officially unveiled the 55-year-old veteran on Monday, in a move that has been greeted with excitement among football enthusiasts.
Shorunmu, a highly respected figure in Nigerian football, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as goalkeeper trainer for top clubs, including Enyimba and Heartland.
Abia Warriors’ management is confident that Shorunmu’s expertise and knowledge will greatly strengthen the goalkeeping department of the team, further enhancing their prospects in the upcoming season.
This is not the first time that Shorunmu has been entrusted with the responsibility of training goalkeepers at the highest level. He recently served as the goalkeeper trainer for the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, during their successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Having once played for several clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League, Shorunmu possesses an in-depth understanding of the league’s dynamics and the challenges faced by goalkeepers in the Nigerian football landscape.
