Lagos APC Defends Demolition of Illegal Structures

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has emphasized the importance of enforcing urban planning laws to maintain order and protect residents. According to the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the demolition of illegal structures across the state is a preventive measure aimed at averting disasters and restoring sanity to affected areas.

The exercise follows a transparent, law-driven process, with multiple warnings and engagement sessions held before enforcement began. Oladejo explained that the state government’s actions are guided by due process and the public interest, as Lagos cannot afford to allow illegal developments to thrive, especially when they endanger infrastructure, waterways, and the environment.

The ongoing operations are part of the state’s long-term vision of urban renewal, environmental sustainability, and creating safer, well-planned communities. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has demonstrated restraint and compassion by engaging stakeholders and granting several compliance extensions before taking action.

Oladejo cautioned against portraying the demolitions as politically motivated, stressing that the state’s priority is maintaining order and protecting lives and property. The spokesperson reaffirmed that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to infrastructural renewal and strict adherence to planning regulations as part of its vision for a liveable and resilient megacity.

The state government’s efforts to enforce urban planning laws are crucial for the city’s development and growth. By ensuring that structures are built in line with approved layouts and environmental standards, the government can prioritize the safety, dignity, and prosperity of all residents. The ongoing operations are expected to continue, with the state government upholding lawful governance and demonstrating genuine compassion for those affected.

The enforcement campaign is a significant step towards achieving the state’s vision of a well-planned and sustainable city. By taking proactive measures to address the dangers posed by illegal structures, the government can prevent disasters and promote a safer, more livable environment for all residents. As the state continues to grow and develop, the importance of enforcing urban planning laws will only continue to increase, making the government’s efforts a crucial aspect of its development strategy.
