The Enugu State Government has recently announced its ambitious plan to construct 81 roads in order to enhance connectivity within the state. This includes the construction of 71 roads in Enugu metropolis, as well as 10 major roads that will span across the entire state. In addition to road construction, the government has also identified roads for dualization and strategic locations for the construction of flyovers to alleviate traffic congestion in the state capital.
During a press briefing after the State Executive Council meeting, Dr. Gerald Otiji, the Commissioner for Works, revealed the details of the road construction plan. He explained, “We have identified approximately 71 roads within Enugu metropolis which are in urgent need of rehabilitation or reconstruction. These roads cover areas such as Trans Ekulu, Abakpa, Emene, Awkunanaw, Coal Camp, Asata, New Layout, Achara Layout, and Idaw River, among others.”
Dr. Otiji also highlighted the government’s focus on addressing heavy traffic areas by constructing flyovers at strategic locations. He said, “We are planning to build a flyover at Abakpa Junction and are exploring the possibility of constructing one at the Chris Chemist/Old Park junction. These measures will significantly improve traffic flow in these areas.”
In addition to Enugu metropolis, the State Executive Council has also identified 10 other major roads that are crucial in connecting various local governments across the three senatorial zones. These roads will receive great attention and development in the near future.
Furthermore, the government has recognized the need to dualize existing roads that experience heavy traffic. Two notable roads that will undergo this transformation are the Enugu-Ugwogo Nike-Opi-Nsukka road and the GRA – Trans Ekulu road.
While discussing the newly approved programmes and policies, Aka Eze Aka, the Commissioner for Information, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving security and alleviating the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy. He also highlighted the government’s goal of transitioning to e-governance.
The State Executive Council has approved the provision of mass transit buses as part of its palliative measures to support the people of Enugu State and ease their burdens. Additionally, the Council has given the green light for the implementation of high-tech security infrastructure to strengthen the state’s security architecture and improve public safety.
Lastly, the Council has prioritized the digitalization of the various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to enhance work efficiency and lay the foundation for the state’s e-governance platform, as envisioned by Governor Peter Mbah.
Dr. Malachy Agbo, the Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication, also addressed the press and announced the government’s plan to decentralize the management of palliatives. The Enugu State Government aims to involve local government councils in the distribution of palliatives to ensure that the relief measures effectively alleviate the suffering of the people.
